Reading unlocks a world of wonder and knowledge for children. But how can we, as parents, nurture a love of reading that goes beyond textbooks? The good news is, it doesn't require complicated methods! Here are some simple ways to make reading a fun and engaging activity at home:
1. Make it a daily ritual: Set aside some quiet time each day, free from distractions, to snuggle up with a book together. This routine establishes reading as a valued part of your day. 2. Let your child take the lead: When choosing books, involve your child! Take trips to the library and let them explore different genres. This empowers them to discover their interests and fosters a sense of ownership over their reading experience. 3. Don't be afraid to get silly!: Reading should be enjoyable! Use funny voices, act out scenes, and let your imagination run wild. This lighthearted approach makes reading more interactive and memorable for your child. 4. Turn it into a game: After reading, play a simple game to reinforce comprehension. Ask questions about the story, create a drawing based on their favorite scene, or act out a part together. 5. Celebrate reading milestones: Acknowledge your child's progress, no matter how small. Did they finish a challenging chapter book? Did they learn a new word? Positive reinforcement keeps them motivated on their reading journey. 6. Make it a family affair: Let your child see you reading for pleasure! Talk about the books you're enjoying and encourage them to recommend stories to you. This creates a shared love of reading within the family. Remember, the most important thing is to make reading a positive experience. Keep it fun, engaging, and tailored to your child's interests. By incorporating these simple tips, you'll be well on your way to raising a happy and confident reader!

We are partnering with Kate Marshall of Tarrant Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to hatch chickens in our classroom. Students will use their reading and writing super powers, on our "Literacy Fun Fridays" to research all about this process and create a presentation and vlog about their experiences to share with the students of BHE. A letter will be sent home about this wonderful opportunity, as well as a media release form for video participation. Student egg ambassadors will be chosen to come up in the mornings to check in on the eggs/hatchlings. More information will be sent home soon! Thank you for attending today's Parent Engagement Meeting! Below are links to read more about the resources discussed to support literacy practices at home.
